Supporting Shakira

We recently distributed some much needed food in Katorogot village and came across a young woman, Nora, and her mother, Shakira (photos below). Nora and Shakira live in a single room dwelling with a dirt floor and tin walls, and have been harshly impacted by the drought conditions. Nora is suffering from complex medical conditions and is highly reliant on her mother for care and support.

Last week, Shakira had a bad fall and dislocated her hip with a possible fracture. She was lying on the dirt floor of her dwelling, unable to move and in severe pain for over a week. We were recently able to support her to get to a nearby hospital for review and pain medication. Following a preliminary assessment, doctors have said she will require surgery and rehabilitation, which will cost approximately KES150K (AUD$1,700).

We are hoping to support Shakira with the surgery costs to provide relief and a quick recovery, and to ensure Nora can continue to be cared for by her mother. We're asking for any support that you may be able to offer. Whether it's $5 or $50, all of it will help us support this family.

Thank you for any support you are able to offer. We will keep you posted on this story.
